As a consumer, I have never really questioned where my waste goes. My relationship with a product ends once it is thrown in the bin. On this earth, all the trash I generate has to eventually go somewhere right? Today, do we know exactly where our trash has ended up? I don't think so.
As a part of our Social Entrepreneurship Saturdays, we had the privilege to meet Mr Roshan Miranda, one of the founders of Waste Ventures. Waste Ventures is a social enterprise that works with informal waste pickers and bulk waste generators to create socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable waste management by diverting waste from the landfills. Working in the waste management sector for a few years led Mr Roshan to subsequently start another enterprise called Bintix.
Our conversation with Mr Roshan was eye opener and it taught me how the waste we generate can we viewed differently. I managed to summarise my learnings and reflections from this session below.
I'm currently working in Waste Ventures! I have learnt so much and am yet to learn more about solid waste management. Seeing the amount of waste processed in our Waste Ventures warehouse has made me more conscious of the waste I generate in my household and ways I can minimise it further. We all know the 3Rs : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But we forget another important R. Refuse.
